The week that wasn't

Well, last week was supposed to be dinosaur week.  We had plans to go to the Field Museum to see Sue and the other dinosaurs, and the boys were really excited.  And then the stomach flu hit our house, with both boys getting sick at the same time, a new experience for Ryan and I.  It was basically like having two newborns in the house in terms of the amount of sleep we got (or didn't get) and the amount of crying we did (yes, all four of us :).  Gav still has a nagging cough, Declan's voice is hoarse from crying so much, and now I've got a sore throat.  I guess it goes along with this crazy cool weather we're having today (its 61 right now!).

It's funny because I went to visit my friend Katie and her new baby Benjamin this week while the boys were at Miss Jeanne's.  Ben snoozed away while Katie and I were able to enjoy a nice long lunch on the roof patio of a restaurant.  On our walk back to Katie's, I was commenting on how well behaved Ben was and she said, well whenever I make a plan, it doesn't work out, but if I just do something spontaneously, everything seems to work out ok.  And that really is how I felt about this week.  All the spontaneous things we did worked out great, and everything I planned for never even happened!

The boys didn't get sick until Friday, so we were able to enjoy most of the week!  I didn't really get around to any of our dinosaur activities, so this week is now dinosaur week.

Gavin has camp with his best buddy Olivia on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  They did camp together last year and really enjoyed it, so we signed up again this year.  To be honest, this year's camp isn't nearly as good (they are in a different section of camp now that they're older).  So when Olivia's mom texted me Wednesday night and asked if we wanted to ditch camp with them the next day, I was all for it (I haven't ditched anything since junior year English, when my friend Puneet and I ditched last period to get ice cream at McDonald's, only to come back after school because he was on the tennis team and I was on the track team.  Such rebels!)

So we ditched camp for a train adventure.  This is one of the things we didn't get to during train week because of another bought with the stomach flu!  We took the Metra down to the Choo Choo restaurant in Des Plaines.  We don't live near the Metra line that runs to Des Plaines, so we drove to the Arlington Race Track Metra station.  That was an adventure in and of itself.  We got stuck behind a freight train on our way down there, so we were already running short on time, and then we couldn't find anywhere to park.  So we ended up parking at the race track and literally running to the station to catch the train (we ended up making it because the train was running late due to the Taste anyways!).  Gavin did a great job of hustling to make the train, and I practically had an asthma attack running with a 30 pound Declan on my hip!  After that our adventure went pretty smoothly.

Before we went on our train adventure, we always have fun in the basement.  Today's game was to make the couch cushions into the ocean and a plank, with the couch being the pirate ship.  Here Dec is walking the plank!
Gavin as a Groucho Marx pirate.
Mommy joins in on the pirate fun.  Our favorite pirate phrases are "Avast ye mateys" (although Dec says Ablast ye mateys) and "oh coconuts!"
Just after our brisk jog to the race track Metra station.  This is Gav and his best buddy Olivia waiting for the train.
The kids have caught sight of the train's lights way down the track.  They were jumping up and down with excitement.  They all did a good job of listening to the announcements as well.
We learned at the Illinois Railway Museum that Dec is a little skittish on trains, so this is him riding on my lap.  He loved it so long as he was sitting with me.  He did gain some courage on the return trip and walked up and down the aisle a bit.
Ethan, Olivia and Gavin riding the rails.  They liked that we could switch the seats so that we were facing each other.
The kids wanted to take a silly face picture too :)
At the Choo Choo restaurant.  We sat up at the counter, where an electric train runs around a track, bringing people their orders.
Gav and Liv enjoying their toy train ride.  Clearly not as cool as the real thing.
I love how Dec is just sitting back with his arm around Ethan, enjoying the ride.
Our grilled cheeses arriving via train!
After eating lunch, all the kids got another special delivery, a cupcake with a train whistle on top!  I'm not sure if the kids liked the cupcake or the whistle better, but we had to listen to those whistles until the moms wisely said that once the Metra train came back, the moms had to hold onto the whistles so that they wouldn't get lost ;)
Group shot in front of the restaurant.  As you can see, all the kiddos are whistling away!
Waiting for our trip back to the race track.
We got to sit up top on our way back home.  All the kids were pretty excited about this (I'll be honest, even I like sitting up top, there is something fun about it).  Here Gav and Liv were enjoying the single seats near each other but away from the little guys.
The stomach flu ravaged our house the next day, and we were pretty much on lockdown all weekend.  On Monday of this week we headed to the "haircut" mall for, appropriately enough, haircuts, lunch (no McDonalds because sick tummies don't like burgers, the kids weren't too happy with me about that) and some play time at Yu Kids Island.  You can tell the kids are still on the mend because they tired out easily here and were ready to go home after an hour.  That could also be because there was a day camp with about 12 boys aged 7-8 there at the same time, and some of them were less than well behaved, and that always annoys my kids (Gavin came up to me multiple times to report the "bad" things the kids were doing, time to have the tattle tale talk I guess!)

Anywho, here is Dec on a new inflatable thingy they have there.  It's like a see-saw with bubbles on either end that slowly inflate and deflate.
The balloon room is still Gav and Dec's favorite at this place, but it's practically impossible to get a good pic in there with balloons flying everywhere.  I like this one of Gavin behind the red balloon.  I forgot how fun it is as a kid to look through a balloon and the whole world is that color.
 Bouncin'
Dec loves to climb this carousel type thing.
Gav was pretty worn down at this point, so I think he was honestly just looking for a place to lay down!

4th of July

So our blogs were a little behind because we got to spend a week escaping from reality.  Our family of four traveled out to windmill Grandma and Grandpa's house for the week of the fourth, as has become our tradition in the last few years.  Grandma and Grandpa throw a great party on the 3rd for the fireworks, and we get to see a lot of our extended family then and on the fourth at a great pool party hosted by Ryan's cousin.  We truly are blessed to have so many wonderful family and friends that we get to spend time with.

Before we left town however, we did blow up our pool for the first time this summer.  Although both the boys aren't too keen on swimming in general, they both love the backyard pool.  I think it's the size and the fact that it's just the two of them, so there aren't any other kids to worry about.
Our theme for this week was appropriately, the fourth of July.  Since we were out of town most of the week, we didn't do a ton of things.  But I did try my hand at tye-dyeing with the kids.  I decided to combine this with pool day to combat any dye snafus.  At first I couldn't convince the kids to get out of the pool to dye their "firework" shirts, but once Gav got started, he loved it!  I had to stop him from using the whole blue bottle on his shirt!
I had to help Dec with his shirt, since the gloves are adult sized and he couldn't really understand how to squeeze the bottle to make the dye come out.
Here's the finished products: Declan's is on the left, Gavin's is on the right.  You then rinse the shirts after the dye sets, and Gavin's took 20 minutes to rinse before all that extra dye came out!
After making our firework shirts, it was back to the pool.  Their favorite game on this day was to throw the beach ball back and forth until someone got it out of the pool.  Then one of the boys would go run after it and shout "I saved the day!" when they got the ball.
The boys made sure that Daddy did a good job fixing all the leaks in the pool!
 Adorbs.
Gavin has given up nap time, except on this day when I almost stepped on a sleeping Gavin at the top of the stairs.
We also managed to squeeze in a trip to Lamb's Farm before we headed out of town.  Not in keeping with the Fourth theme, but you know, I had a Groupon :)  I like this pic of Dec holding my hand while he works up the nerve to pet the goat.  He is always nervous at first and then warms up to the animals.
Dec playing mini-golf.  This is what Gavin spent most of his time doing (he played 36 holes with Ryan).  Declan even got to use a "football" golf ball, which he definitely didn't want to give back.
 Gavin lining up his putt.
Gavin's poses crack me up, I don't know where he comes up with all of these.
I love this pic.  Gavin looking off in the distance, golf club raised, like he just conquered something. Declan holding the pig's nose looking confused.  It's perfect in it's weirdness!
We managed to pull Gavin away from golfing to check out the animals as well.
 Some well brushed goats.
Declan helping to clean up before the big party at Grandma and Grandpa's house.
Despite the glare from Gavin here, he actually was really excited to wear his firework shirt to watch the fireworks!
I forgot to bring my real camera, and my iPhone just doesn't cut it when it comes to night shots, so excuse the poor quality of these pics!  Here's Gavin enjoying the fireworks with his friend Jonah.
The driveway crew.  Declan is not in the pic because he watched about half a firework before Ryan had to take him inside and hold him for the rest of the firework display.  But afterwards Dec would tell everyone that would listen how awesome the fireworks were.
Grandpa and Gavin.  Grandpa enjoyed Gavin's running commentary on the fireworks ("ooh, that's a big one!"  "A green one, and a blue one, that one went really high!")
It got a little chilly that night, and I completely forgot to pack anything warm for the kids to wear, so Gav is wearing my Cross Country shirt.
Windmill Grandpa brought home perhaps the best toy you can give kids:  a giant box.  While Ryan and I escaped to Iowa City for a couple of nights, Grandpa helped the kids turn the box into a kids only fort (you can't really tell in the pic, but the top left corner has a picture of a grown up with a red cross through it.  Gavin explained to me that this means no big people allowed in).  There's a door in the front where Declan is sitting and a skylight that Gavin is poking Rex through.
Playing in the big box with their cousin Eliana.  We learned this week that Gav and Dec need to start sticking up for themselves, because they let Eliana walk all over them, and would then complain about it afterwards!
Each year on the fourth of July (and on Memorial Day), the main park in Geneseo puts up flags for all the veterans.  It is stunning to look at, and we always try to find Great Grandpa Pettit's flag.  This year we happened to park right in front of it, so here are Dec and Gav with their Great Grandpa's flag.  Gav seemed to kind of understand when I tried to explain to him that this is a flag honoring Great Grandma's husband.
We tried to play on the playground as well, but that only lasted about 10 minutes before Dec had a major meltdown.  The day after fireworks and staying up til 10:30 is just never good with toddlers, and you're pretty much playing a waiting game until the tantrum comes.  It's always a delight when it comes in a highly public place :)
 The calm before the storm.
Post meltdown and nap, Dec was up and ready to head to the pool party with his cousins Kailyn and Bryce.
Both boys love the pool(s) at their cousin's house.  They have both a kiddie pool with waterfall and fountain, and an adult pool.  The kids had a blast and swam for over 3 hours!  It's also a lot of fun when pretty much all of your cousins are around to play with.
One of the many fun games involved throwing things onto the fountain and making Mommy retrieve them because the boys don't want to get their delicate faces splashed.
 Cousins everywhere!
Dec immediately turned the pool noodle into a sword.
Relaxing with his wet hat on.  Gav loves to completely submerge his hat and then put it back on again.
The boys are fine with splashing, as long as they are the ones doing it!
By the end of the day, Dec was tuckered out.
While we were out at Grandma and Grandpa's, we took the kids to Monkey Joes.  The MJ's around here have closed, and this is one of Gavin's favorite places, so he was pretty excited to go (he is already asking me to go again).
Dec is big enough now to enjoy this place as well.  Here he is demonstrating his excellent climbing skills.  What you won't see are the pics of the Mommy rescue where I had to wedge myself into a jumpy house built for kids 10 and under to help Declan climb up a wall and go down a slide.
Hard to take action shots on an iPhone!
Wrestling with the bear/Grandpa.  The kids were pretty cranky before this fun game that Grandpa invented.
Declan barely had time to say goodbye to the windmills before he was out cold on our way back home.  He's clutching the green football that Grandma and Grandpa bought them on a trip to the toy store.
We did one more fourth of July craft once we got back home: glitter fireworks.  Both the boys were really into this craft.
Dec didn't want to do the glitter by himself at first, but he soon found that it was quite fun to dump copious amounts of glitter onto the page.
 Dec's fireworks.
 Gavin's fireworks.
